In this fun, hands-on workshop, you’ll learn to sew a stylish, versatile Kimono jacket using the Simplicity S8172 pattern. With four unique variations to choose from, you can customize your garment to fit your personal style. By the end of class, you’ll walk away with a custom-made Kimono and the confidence to take on future clothing projects.

How to Prepare Before Class
To ensure we make the most of our time together at the machine, please complete the following steps before arriving:

Pre-wash & Dry Your Fabric: Pre-washing prevents unexpected shrinking after your garment is finished.

Cut Your Pattern Pieces: Cut out your pattern pieces ahead of time using your measurements. (Tip: If you fall between sizes, we recommend cutting the larger size—we can easily adjust and review fit in class!)
Supply List
Please bring the following materials and tools with you to class:

Pattern: Simplicity S8172 (Please purchase prior to class)

Fabric: Woven fabrics with a soft drape—such as Cotton, Rayon, Viscose, Linen, or Chambray. (Please refer to the pattern envelope for required yardage. Please avoid silks, satins, charmeuse, or velvet for this workshop.)

Sewing Machine: In good working order, complete with power cord, foot pedal, a full bobbin, and matching thread.

Needles: Standard Universal 80/12 needle.

Basic Sewing Tools:

Fabric scissors & pinking shears

Fabric marking pen or chalk

Presser Feet: Standard presser foot. If your machine includes an overcast stitch, please bring your overcast foot ("G" foot for Brother/Baby Lock machines).
Meet Your Instructor: Amy Datema
Amy’s sewing journey began 12 years ago, sparked by a passion for fashion design and a lot of creative experimentation. From mastering the basics through books and online tutorials to refashioning thrift store finds and working with denim, she knows firsthand what it takes to start from scratch. Amy is passionate about creating an encouraging, judgment-free environment where beginners can learn, make mistakes, and build confidence.
When she isn't in her sewing room, Amy loves spending time with her family, playing with her dog Otis, volunteering at Lamont CRC, and traveling with her husband.

Class Policy
Class Policy
Thank you for considering classes at Family Sewing. Our classes require planning and preparation in advance including ordering materials and supplies, scheduling teachers and reserving our classroom space. When students request cancellations or reschedule at the last minute, it affects all of the above in addition to taking away a spot from someone who wanted to take the class.
We are unable to make exceptions to our policy listed below. That includes reasons of illness, travel, or work. If you are unable to attend a class at the last minute, please consider offering the spot to a friend!
If Family Sewing cancels a class for any reason, you will receive a FULL refund.
If you wish to cancel 21 days or more before the date of your class, you will receive a FULL
refund.
If you cancel 14-20 days before the date of your class, you will receive a refund in the form of store credit.
If you cancel 3-14 days before the date of your class, you will receive a refund in the form of store credit minus the Teacher Fee for the class.
If you do not cancel your class within 48 hours of the class start date and time OR you do not show up, you will forfeit your payment for that class.
If you register for an event or class with a guest educator, your class fee is nonrefundable.
