If you've ever looked at the inside seam of your favorite t-shirt and noticed those neat, wrapped rows of thread, you’ve seen a serger at work. But did you know a serger can do so much more than just finish raw edges?
In this fun and supportive beginner's guide, you'll gain hands-on confidence with your machine while crafting two cozy, custom accessories to take home!

What We'll Cover:

The fundamentals of setting up and operating your serger

Adjusting thread tension to achieve the perfect stitch every time

Crafting a delicate rolled hem on lightweight fabrics

Creating decorative ladder stitches and gathering fabric on a serger

Step-by-step assembly of stylish infinity scarves and headbands
Supply List
Please bring the following items with you to class:

Equipment:

Your serger in good working order (with power cord and foot pedal)

Serger gathering foot (If you have one)

Thread: Matching thread for your chosen projects

Practice Material: Woven fabric scraps for practicing stitches and testing tension

Fabric for Headbands:
-
1/4 yard of knit fabric (a Cotton/Spandex mix works best). Feel free to bring extra pieces if you'd like to color-block or make multiple headbands!

Fabric for Infinity Scarf:

1 yard of soft knit fabric (Cotton knit or Bamboo Jersey are wonderful, cozy choices).

If you'd like a contrasting or color-blocked scarf, please bring two 1-yard pieces of knit fabric.

Meet Your Instructor: Amy Datema
Amy’s sewing journey began 12 years ago, sparked by a passion for fashion design and a lot of creative experimentation. From mastering the basics through books and online tutorials to refashioning thrift store finds and working with denim, she knows firsthand what it takes to start from scratch. Amy is passionate about creating an encouraging, judgment-free environment where beginners can learn, make mistakes, and build confidence.
When she isn't in her sewing room, Amy loves spending time with her family, playing with her dog Otis, volunteering at Lamont CRC, and traveling with her husband.

Class Policy
Class Policy
Thank you for considering classes at Family Sewing. Our classes require planning and preparation in advance including ordering materials and supplies, scheduling teachers and reserving our classroom space. When students request cancellations or reschedule at the last minute, it affects all of the above in addition to taking away a spot from someone who wanted to take the class.
We are unable to make exceptions to our policy listed below. That includes reasons of illness, travel, or work. If you are unable to attend a class at the last minute, please consider offering the spot to a friend!
If Family Sewing cancels a class for any reason, you will receive a FULL refund.
If you wish to cancel 21 days or more before the date of your class, you will receive a FULL
refund.
If you cancel 14-20 days before the date of your class, you will receive a refund in the form of store credit.
If you cancel 3-14 days before the date of your class, you will receive a refund in the form of store credit minus the Teacher Fee for the class.
If you do not cancel your class within 48 hours of the class start date and time OR you do not show up, you will forfeit your payment for that class.
If you register for an event or class with a guest educator, your class fee is nonrefundable.
